Riverston
Admissions
We have realised the importance of allowing students to commence their education at any point during the school term and encourage parents to come and visit us during one of our weekly open mornings. Our biggest strength is the way in which we nurture every individual: we want our students to be happy at Riverston. Lower, Middle and Upper SchoolsInitially parents and pupils are invited into school to meet with the Headmistress for a tour and informal interview. This would be followed by a short (2-3 day) trial visit, during which time students will be expected to complete an assessment test and generally get to know our school. Prospective pupils are made to feel very welcome and are “buddied” with a volunteer pupil who will support them during their stay. After the trial period a decision is made as to whether or not we are able to fully meet the needs of the pupil. Once a place is offered, a pupil may start as soon as the acceptance fee and first term’s fees are paid in full. At Riverston we are accustomed to accepting pupils throughout the year and whenever possible will be happy for them to start immediately after their trial visit. Year 7 entry onlyPupils
entering into Year 7 will be invited to sit the formal entrance
assessment, usually taken in November, March and May. A place will be
offered based upon the result of this assessment.
Part 1 – pupils are invited to Riverston in June to meet the Headmistress and their future form tutors. An explanation of our ‘Welcome’ booklet is given and clarification given of our expectations of each new pupil. This is a fairly formal session preparing them for what is ahead. Part 2 – two days before term commences in September, an ice breaker session with team building activities. The emphasis is on negating any anxieties attached to secondary transfer in a much more informal atmosphere where pupils get to know members of staff and prefects. After a place has been offered a two part induction programme is planned to help pupils to transfer smoothly from primary to secondary education. Overseas students(Starting mid-term/mid-year) Several students at Riverston have relocated with their families from many different countries around the world. We have welcomed students from:
Quite often students enter our school unable to speak English. Fortunately, within a few weeks they are capable of holding a conversation with their new-found friends. We provide additional short-term support for any overseas students who require language assistance. Over the years we have realised the importance of allowing students to commence their education at any point during the school term; in particular if they have experienced a less than conducive learning environment in their previous school. Parents faced with making a quick decision to help their child change schools because they are unhappy, are encouraged to come and visit us during one of our weekly open mornings. Our biggest strength is the way in which we nurture every individual: we want our students to be happy at Riverston!
